Announcements

General announcements for the module will be made on these pages. Please check back often.

The Module Hand In

We ran a final briefing session on the module and the various elements that need to be handed in during our final lecture on Thursday, 15 December.

We will be collecting all of your work in our studio - 82C25 - on Wednesday, 11 January, 2012 at 10.30 am. Please ensure you are free on this day.

We will supply all required coursework submission sheets on the day. Please note that the School of Art and Design uses different coursework submission sheets which are not the same as those used by the School of Computing and Mathematics. You only need to bring your work, everything else will be supplied.

We need to collect the following from you:

The latter two can be supplied on either a CDR or DVD, depending on the size of your files.

Please note, we will be assessing your work from your server, the physical hand in (CDR or DVD) is for archival purposes only.

The files supplied on the CDR/DVD should be the source files for your research diary, including a database dump if applicable. If you're using a hosted service, please provide a static backup of the content. There are tools available to help you in this endeavour.

As previously mentioned, the URLs we will be assessing your work from are as follows:

Live project:

http://scm.ulster.ac.uk/~B00123456/511/liveproject

Research Diary:

http://scm.ulster.ac.uk/~B00466737/511/blog

Please ensure that you have put redirects in place so that accessing these URLs will point us directly to the Live Project and Research Diary files respectively. Neglecting to do so will be seen as non-submission of the work in question, and can lead to failing the module.

The Live Project Briefing

We ran two briefing sessions for the live project on Friday, 2 December, 2011. As discussed at the sessions, the deadline for the initial content (branding proposals and a beta web site) is 4.00 pm on Wednesday, 7 December.

The templates you need for the branding are available here. The content for the web site is available here.

Get Some Web Hosting (It Will Earn You Money)

As final year students on IMD you should all have your own web hosting in addition to your IMD space. This allows you to experience hosting client sites and, even better, learn how to charge for hosting.

If you're serious about continuing in a career in interactive design you should certainly own your own domain name (web address) and establish a personal email address. No one will take you seriously as a web designer if you're using your university email address or, worse a Hotmail or Gmail address. Nothing is worse than: "My email address? No problem! It's: hotlegs1993@gmail.com…" Think how that makes you sound.

We recommend Dreamhost and because we use them can give you a little advice during lab sessions on their setup and how to use their control panel. Use the promo code FEHLER to get a discount when you sign up.

Hosting should not cost you any money. With Dreamhost you can register and set up web sites for your clients and then charge them for hosting their sites on your server. Your hosting should be earning you money!

Get Dropbox

As mentioned in the lecture, if you're not using it, we strongly recommend you sign up for a Dropbox account. You can use this for a number of purposes: as a means of sync'ing multiple computers; as a means of creating a free, shared working space to enable collaboration with your colleagues; or as a form of off-site storage for archiving purposes.

If you click either of the links below you get an additional 250MB of storage space free, and so do we.

Thanks for sharing the love and enjoy your Dropbox.

Module Documents

As discussed at the introductory lecture in Week 1, the assessable components of this module are threefold: a research diary in the form of a blog; a live project, for a real world client; and a Major Project Proposal.

We strive to ensure the assessment criteria is as clear as possible and grade all the components on a sliding scale of 1-10 as outlined in the handouts distributed at the Week 1 lecture. Download the assessment sheet for reference.
