A History of Communication Design Part Two
Part two of the brief introduction to the history of design took us through a number of different designers and agencies. Here are a few of them:
- Herb Lubalin – Magazine design and designer of the font Avant Garde
- Wim Crouwel – master of the grid
- Wolfgang Weingart – the father of postmodern typography
We looked at the introduction of the major design groups around the mid sixties and early seventies with:
We then looked at the influence of music on the design business with the work of:
- Jamie Reid – work for Sex Pistols
- Vaughan Oliver worked for 4AD Records
Others worth mentioning are:
- Barney Bubbles - work for Hawkwind plus Ian Dury and the Blockheads
- Peter Saville – who also worked for Pentagram
- Russell Mills – numerous musicians including Brian Eno
Other designers covered included:
- Neville Brody – early 80s deigners now running research Studios
- April Greiman – embraced early computer graphic technology
- David Carson - developed the 'grunge' approach to design and typography
- Paula Scher – designer for Pentagram and
- Stefan Sagmeister - embraces a hand-made approach to typography
The movies shown can be found on the Hilman Curtis website. You will also find movies on Paula Scher, Pentagram and Milton Glaser. All well worth watching.

Project Three – A Design Family Tree
For this weeks project we want you to take a piece of contemporary design and try to find where the designer took their inspiration from. It would also be useful if you could find out who designed your chosen piece. You can choose a CD cover, a poster, advertisement, a piece of packaging, brochure or magazine cover and try to discover which period of history your choice originated from.
Some of the examples shown during the lecture included Mika's 'Like in Cartoon Motion' which has it's roots in the work of Milton Glaser while Jamie Reid's work for the Sex Pistols can be tracked back to Dada.
We would like you to tell us a little about the period, artist/designer your chosen piece was inspired by and show some examples of their work. So if I had chosen the Sex Pistols I would write bit about Jamie Reid who designed the cover then talk about the Dadaist movement and show some examples of Marcel Duchamp and Kurt Schwitters work.
